Woman who took down a confederate flag

A woman from Raleigh, NC decided to take
down the confederate flag, and she got arrested. She claimed it was hurtful to
see the flag above the State Capitol while the victims of the gun shot from a
young man inspired by the confederate flag symbol claimed he wanted to start a
racial war. The judge ordered 3000 dollars bond, and she got released
after she paid the money.
While the flag is only a symbol, it is
people’s intention and interpretation of its meanings that reveal the moral
character of such community. It is a good thing today the
legislature and the government official have requested to remove the
confederate flag. By doing so, they have confirmed raising the confederate flag
was morally wrong because of the intention or the true meaning of its
symbolism. While the debate is close to an end, the question I could ask if I
was a utilitarian: Is the majority of people happy with the removal of the
confederate flag? Who should we call “the majority"? (Only South Carolinian or the humanity) Utilitarianism is short means greatest good for
the majority. We have to define “the majority” because it may be possible that
most people in South Carolina support the confederation flag. However, if the majority
means all American citizens, fact could reveal that most of them do not support
the confederation flag.
I think it is out of duty that this decision was made. The legislature and
government official found after the incident leading to the death of 9 people
they have a moral obligation of removing the confederate flag despite the
consequences.
